Seneca Park, Marina open as usual during repairs at dam

August 7, 2014

Seneca Lake Park will remain open as usual while a portion of Rt. 574 (Seneca Dam Rd.) located beside Seneca Dam is closed weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for a two-week period beginning Monday, Aug. 11, for repairs at the dam.

A detour has been established in cooperation with the Ohio Department of Transportation to assist visitors and guests traveling to Seneca Lake Park while the road is closed Monday through Friday during the weeks of Aug. 11-15 and Aug. 18-22, according to Matt Steffen, Seneca Lake Park manager.

From I-77, take Rt. 313 east and turn right onto Rt. 285. Follow south and turn left onto Rt. 566. Take Rt. 566 east and turn left onto Rt. 574. Take Rt. 574 north to the park entrance, which will be on the right.

Seneca Marina, as well as the public boat launch ramp located near the intersection of Rts. 313 and 574 will not be affected by the road closure and also will be open as usual, Steffen said.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is closing the portion of Rt. 574 near the dam in order to complete construction on a project at the dam that began earlier in the year but was halted by cold weather.

The MWCD, a political subdivision of the state, was organized in 1933 to develop and implement a plan to reduce flooding and conserve water for beneficial public uses in the Muskingum River Watershed, the largest wholly contained watershed in Ohio. Since their construction, the 16 reservoirs and dams in the MWCD region have been credited for saving an estimated $11.1 billion worth of potential property damage from flooding, according to the federal government, as well as providing popular recreational opportunities that bolster the region’s economy. A significant portion of the reservoirs are managed by the MWCD and the dams are managed for flood-risk management by the federal U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).
